GLENCOE, IL (Jan. 21, 2014) – Leave winter far behind at “Escape to Paradise,” a preview event for the Orchid Show, co-chaired by Carolyn Katz and Lorill Haynes of the Woman’s Board of the Chicago Horticultural Society. Guests are encouraged to don resort cocktail attire; they will be greeted with Hawaiian leis upon entry into the warm floral oasis. The musical group, Aloha Lives!, will play as guests sip tropical cocktails and savor Hawaiian-inspired hors d’oeuvres while surrounded by 10,000 sensational orchids in floor-to-ceiling displays of colorful, fragrant blooms.
The perfect Valentine’s Day celebration, “Escape to Paradise” will have preview hours from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 14. Cost is $125 per person. Proceeds will go toward the Woman’s Board of the Chicago Horticultural Society’s $1 million pledge to the Chicago Botanic Garden. The pledge, “Growing the Future,” is currently in its third year.
The Orchid Show is the Chicago Botanic Garden’s first month-long exhibition celebrating one of the world’s largest and most diverse flowering plant families. Guests will learn how orchids have adapted to life on six continents and explore the cultural and historic connections between people and orchids. The Garden’s Greenhouses and Galleries and exhibition halls of Regenstein Center will be filled with brightly colored orchids cascading from archways, climbing up columns and luring you close to the branches of orchid “trees.” While enjoying the tropical sensations, guests can learn fun and fascinating facts about the orchid family and the importance of protecting the native habitats of these remarkable plants.
