GLENCOE, IL (July 21, 2014) – Colorful kites will decorate the sky at the tenth annual Kite Festival at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The popular summer event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting, on Saturday and Sunday, August 9 and 10, in the meadow west of Evening Island. Bring the family for a full day of outdoor fun and take advantage of the only opportunity to fly kites at the Garden.

Visitors can sit back and soak up the sunshine as they enjoy enchanting set-to-music stunt-kite performances by members of the Chicago Fire Kite Team, the longest-running competitive sport kite team in the United States. They have been competing and demonstrating team sport kite ballet and precision, choreographed for groups of three and six, since 1986. The Chicago Fire Kite Team has been invited to kite festivals around the world and has entertained crowds in the United States, Canada, France, England and Japan.

Kids are encouraged to join in on the fun at the kite-making workshops from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Materials will be provided. Children can also participate in the Kids’ Mad Dash, a contest that ignites competitive fervor as participants race to get their kite built and soaring in the air first. You can register for the race at the Gift of Wings tent located on-site. The first 30 children to register will receive a free kite to build and fly in the competition.

Participants may bring and fly their own kites in the designated Kite Festival area between performances. Beautiful and vibrant kites will also be available to purchase from Gift of Wings, a kite retailer located in Milwaukee, WI. A free Kite Festival tram will be available to transport visitors between the Visitor Center and West Meadow.

The Kite Festival is made possible with the help of the Kite Society of Wisconsin and Illinois and Gift of Wings. Admission is free. Regular parking fees apply.
