“Bonsai: A Patient Art” by Yale University Press, 166 pages, $40
With fresh, elegant photography, this stunning volume presents more than 60 living masterpieces from the Bonsai Collection of the Chicago Botanic Garden. Published by the Garden in conjunction with Yale University Press, the book presents each patiently nurtured tree at the peak of its seasonal beauty. In an engaging opening essay, the book introduces the practice and philosophy of bonsai, its spiritual resonance, and its horticultural sophistication. Then, alongside each tree's portrait, is a short, thoughtful discussion of the species and style of the tree, as well as its individual history and character. Readers will cherish this superbly conceived and designed book while gaining a new appreciation for the living masterpieces that inspired it. The book was written by the Garden’s bonsai curator Ivan Watters and bonsai master Susumu Nakamura, and edited by Ann R. Neff, with photography by Tim Priest. Garden board member and bonsai enthusiast Robert H. Malott supported the publication of this book.

The Temple of Flora, Robert John Thornton, $59.99
The complete reprint of all color plates from Robert John Thornton's monumental work, The Temple of Flora, first published in London in 1799. In the late 1700s, British doctor Robert John Thornton hired the premier artists of his day to paint floral specimens both common and exotic. Though Thornton went bankrupt before he could finish the costly project, the 31 completed plates are considered masterpieces of botanical illustration.
