A fresh green ivy topiary in the shape of a wreath, a ball or even a miniature Christmas tree is a festive accent during the holidays as well as all year long! Whether you create one yourself or receive one as a gift, this living statuary will last for years with the proper care and culture.
Ingredients
• Suitable wire form in desired shape
• Container with drainage holes
• Potting mix
• Small rooted vining plants (English ivy or creeping fig are good choices)
Procedure
• Fill container with moistened potting mix and insert wire frame.
• Place small plants at base of each side of frame and begin to weave the trailing plants around, through and up the frame.
• As plants grow, pinch back to create bushiness.
• Prune wayward vines with small scissors.
Culture and Care
• Follow cultural care instructions for particular plant chosen.
• Mist foliage regularly in winter with tepid water.
• Do not allow soil to dry out in summer.
• Fertilize in spring and summer with dilute balanced fertilizer (10-10-10).
• Move plant outside after May 15 to semi-shaded location.
• Bring plant indoors before first frost and place in bright window with no direct sun.
• Continue to weave new growth through open spaces in frame.
• Prune or pinch scraggly growth to maintain fullness of shape.
