Coordinator, Secondary Education and Career Programs
PURPOSE:
To coordinate planning, development, and implementation of science and environmental programs for middle and high school students, and young adults both at the Garden and satellite locations. Coordinate programming of career and internship programs for high school and young adults.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
1. Coordinate on-site programs for middle/high school students and young adults, including College First, Science First, Science First Lake County & the John. H. Stroger Jr. Internship Program.
3. Conduct daily operation of College First, Science First, and Science First Lake County and JHS Internship programs including all events, programs, and recruitment, including student recruitment, placement, monitoring, curriculum development, hiring and supervision of instructors, ongoing program evaluation, ongoing student tracking, and establishment of program policies, in addition to other tasks required to insure smooth and successful program implementation.
4. Promote teen and career programs through annual recruitment materials development and print pieces for direct mail and for exhibit at local teacher conferences.
5. Develop and maintain working relationships with area colleagues and the Chicago Public Schools to provide students access to academic programs, job training, and other services.
6. Complete all administrative activities associated with programming including writing reports, budget oversight, and progress reporting. Collaborate with development on grant writing and fundraising.
7. Participate with other Center for Teaching and Learning staff in the planning and implementing of special events, exhibits, and teacher and environmental programs as needed.
8. Other projects and duties as assigned.
DEPARTMENT: Center for Teaching and Learning
REPORTS TO: Manager, Teacher & Student Programs in the Center for Teaching and Learning
SUPERVISES: Program Instructors, Volunteers
COOPERATIVE RELATIONSHIPS: Other Center for Teaching and Learning program areas, Visitor programs, Group visits, Tours, Horticulture, Production greenhouses, Education Greenhouses, Custodial Services, and Research.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: MS or MA in Environmental Education, Botany, Plant Science, Horticulture, Education, or Museum Education. At least one year of experience in a classroom or museum with emphasis on science. Experience working with teens a plus. A combination of plant or environmental sciences knowledge and its application in informal education/museum settings is ideal. Knowledge/familiarity with inquiry-based and constructivist teaching philosophies and methods.
