Fall color prairie plants

McDonald Woods: Blooming: Common witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana). Look up and see a towering canopy of oaks and hickories. Look down and see moss and lichens on fallen logs, and a blanket of leaves protecting the wildflowers, which will bloom again next spring.

Prairie and Skokie River: A walk on Prairie paths in November fills the senses with the quiet solitude of prairies finished with their growing season and abundant with the gold, browns and whites of maturing seeds. Visible parts of prairie plants are slowly turning into hay for hungry prairie animals while deep in the soil, plant roots thrive waiting for the renewal of spring. Enjoy your walk.
