Construction on the North Lawndale Green Youth Farm began in the spring of 2005, building on the success of the North Chicago/Waukegan site. The land was preserved for the project by the City of Chicago's Department of Planning and Development and ultimately, Neighborspace (www.neighbor-space.org), an urban land trust. Much of the first season at the new site was spent constructing raised beds in order to protect plant roots and crops from the contaminated soil (the prior site occupant was a dry cleaning plant). During the second season, 15 students helped to enhance the site through the addition of art work, compost systems (vermicompost and "regular" compost), and more abundant crops.
