PHOTO: Nicole Cavender.Dr. Cavender works to strengthen the Arboretum's leadership and activities in tree science and conservation, build capacity to grow the Arboretum's service to the public, improve the vigor of the urban forest in the Chicago region, save trees from extinction through global collaboration, facilitate technology transfer to industry and the public, and provide leadership to the world's professional arboreta through ArbNet.

She currently serves on the United States Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Research Advisory Council, where she advocates for research in urban forestry. Prior to 2012, she was chief programmatic officer at The Wilds, a large conservation center in southeastern Ohio. She led the development and activities of its restoration ecology program from 2002 to 2011. Dr. Cavender earned her Ph.D. at The Ohio State University in horticulture and crop science, and her undergraduate degree at Ohio University in environmental and plant biology.
