Participation and Transportation

Who participates? Students from Chicago Public Schools who are currently sophomores or juniors, have a strong interest in nature and science, a desire to spend their summer outdoors exploring the Garden's 365 acres of plants, and can commit to attending the program every day, Monday to Friday, for eight weeks from June to August as well as once-a-month school-year meetings on Saturdays.

Students who participated in our Science First program are invited and encouraged to apply as well. We are very proud of our 11 College First summer 2008 interns who came from Science First!

Applications are due by the end of April and are available for download here. Students arrive at the Garden by 9 a.m. and leave at 3 p.m. each day on one of two free school bus routes provided by the Garden. Below are the summer 2009 bus routes:

West Pullman School 11941 S. Parnell
Vanderpoel School 9510 S. Prospect
Altgeld School 1340 W. 71st Street
Hyde Park Academy 6220 S. Stony Island Ave
Mollison School 4415 S. King Drive
Juarez Community Academy 2150 S. Laftin Street

Benefits of the program

College First graduates are telling us they truly benefit from participation in the program. In 2006 we began a graduate tracking program to keep in touch with as many of the students as possible from the past 14 years of the program. Since 2004, a hundred percent of our graduates have enrolled in higher education — and many are pursuing degrees in science fields.

Our five College First June 2008 graduates enrolled in the following schools:

• DePaul University
• George Washington University
• Northeastern Illinois University
• Truman College
