Dear President’s Circle Member,
Anticipation. The dictionary defines this word as “expectation” and for me, it also conveys excitement and hope—the kind that is unique to the holiday season. Here at the Chicago Botanic Garden, as we enter the cycle of winter holidays, I’m happily anticipating Wonderland Express, which opens on November 23. I hope to see you at the preview family celebration for President’s Circle and Guild members next Tuesday (more below). On December 5, you may also want to try a new event, Holiday Cheers!, a tasting of spirits, wine, and winter brews held on the month and day Prohibition ended in 1933.
By now you have received the winter issue of Keep Growing. Inside are details about Wonderland Express and the Three Friends of Winter bonsai silhouette show, as well as a then-and-now look at Dixon Prairie and profiles of the Woman’s Board, our Conservation Land Management interns, and the “Rodeo Farm,” a new 1.5-acre site in Chicago for urban agricultural jobs training. If holiday gifts are a challenge, you’ll be glad to read about our new customized greeting cards, for which you select from our best Garden photos and write the message appearing inside the cards; the beautiful book Bonsai: A Patient Art, featuring the Garden’s Bonsai Collection—board member and bonsai enthusiast Robert H. Malott supported publication of this book; and the new eau de parfum Tru Blooms Chicago, scented with roses and lavender grown locally, including at the Garden. A tribute gift to the Garden to honor someone who “has it all” may also be a refreshing gesture this season.

Three Friends of Winter Bonsai Silhouette Show Preview Party
Friday, January 25
5:30 to 8 p.m.
This magical evening, exclusively for members of the President’s Circle and Director’s Circle, showcases the Garden’s Three Friends of Winter bonsai silhouette show. Three Friends of Winter is generously supported by the Astellas USA Foundation.
Exciting as it is, the winter holiday season can also be exhausting. When holiday anticipation is dampened by yet another list of chores, remember that the Garden always offers an antidote to the season’s occasionally frenzied pace. Our perennials have been put to bed for winter, but outside at the Garden there is a new sort of beauty to enjoy as evergreens and the bare branches of deciduous trees and shrubs, with their fascinating forms and textures, take center stage. I intend to step away from my to-do list and walk through the Garden often this winter, and I hope you to do the same. Each season here offers respite from the stresses of the outside world through the “nurture of nature.”
With gratitude for all you have done for the Garden,
President & CEO
