Join the Chicago Botanic Garden's free walking tours. Each tour meets at the Visitor Center and begins at 1 p.m., lasting from 45 minutes to an hour.
On April 26, visitors will explore the 100-acre McDonald Woods during the traditional Earth Day walk (Earth Day is earlier in the week on April 22), led by volunteer Joanne Schmitz. The naturally occurring oak woodland community of plants and animals has been restored for the public to experience some of the rich native communities that once covered the Midwest.
Walks are as follows:
April 26: Earth Day Walk in McDonald Woods
Knowledgeable volunteer Joanne Schmitz identifies spring wildflowers in bloom and talks about the "whys" of their ephemeral presence in the woods. How the woods have changed throughout the Chicago Botanic Garden's history and the restoration efforts currently underway will also be part of this informative and timely spring walk.
May 3: Sculpture Tour
The Chicago Botanic Garden has an impressive sculpture collection, with work by numerous well-known artists. Susan Boothe, exhibitions curator, will lead a walk through the Garden discussing works by Martin Puryear, Harry Bertoia, Simon Verity, Tony Tasset, and Sylvia Shaw Judson, and showing how their placement enhances the landscape.
May 10: Crab Apple Walk on Evening Island
Crab apples are one of the real showstoppers of the spring landscape; their spicy fragrance and delicate color are a sure sign of the season. Join Jim Matkovich, ISA board-certified Master Arborist from Autumn Tree Care Experts, Inc., to bask in the bowers of crab apple blossoms that cloak Evening Island and the Great Basin. During this guided garden walk, Jim will answer questions about crab apple varieties and their care, and any other tree care questions that come up along the way.
May 17: An Arborist's Top Picks of the Springtime Landscape
There's more to spring than tulips and daffodils! Trees put on an impressive show at this time of year, too, with displays that range from subtle to boisterous. Join Dan Klindera, vice president and general manager of Autumn Tree Care Experts, Inc., to marvel at the countless contributions trees add to the springtime landscape.
May 24: Spring Garden Containers
Join Nancy Clifton, horticuture program specialist, as she leads a tour of container plantings in the English Walled Garden, McGinley Pavilion, the Enabling Garden, and the Regenstein Fruit & Vegetable Garden. Participants will learn about various plant options and pick up design tips, plus discover how to select and mix colors and planting styles.
