Preconcert carillon tours and demonstrations 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. (every 15 minutes)
Kimberly Schafer’s interest in the carillon led her to pursue a carillon education on two continents and then to perform carillon concerts in the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. She has performed in residence at The University of Michigan, The University of Texas, Princeton University, and the University of Chicago. Since 2015 she has performed regularly for Sunday services at St. Chrysostom’s Episcopal Church in Chicago. Schafer takes a keen interest in teaching the carillon: she spearheaded a carillon instruction program at The University of Texas and also taught carillon at Princeton University and at the University of Chicago. Past campanological projects include translating a carillon thesis and writing a musicological dissertation on the role of the carillon in American universities. In 2015 she initiated a new organization in Chicago to advocate for and promote tower bells. Schafer also writes the blog Bell Advocate to further these efforts.
