British horticulturist and nurseryman Paul Whittaker certainly can be called a booster of bamboo. He reports on bamboo's many qualities in this guide to these adaptable, useful plants. Even though some bamboos are more finicky than others, as a whole they have the ability not just to survive but to flourish. This and other qualities are discussed in this introduction to hardier bamboo for gardens, which he describes in a directory of the “50 of the best.” The individual profiles contain a checklist of each plant’s qualities, including size, cold hardiness, and potential for invasiveness. In addition, this work includes practical tips on plant selection, culture, uses in differing landscapes, and other helpful tips about bamboo.
