This book is one of a new generation of concise, illustrated gardening guides, providing in this case practical information on gardening with perennials. With this book, a beginner can learn about choosing and planting perennials, planning color combinations, growing perennials in containers and producing his or her own perennials. There are other sections dedicated to plant plans, naturalistic plantings, planting in shade and preparing the ground in advance. In the last 10 pages of the book, there are very brief descriptions of recommended perennials.
In spite of the beautiful illustrations and diagrams and the detailed instructions, the lack of details on specific plants is a problem. Given the interest of beginning gardeners in perennials, this book does not do justice to the subject for its intended audience.
