Mr. Dunmire's book is an excellent update of one of the best and most reasonably priced books on orchids for beginners. The detailed yet concise descriptions of plants, potting and media are all there, and the updated illustrations and photographs add to the book's enjoyment. Technical information is easy to read and comprehend, and the beauty and joy of growing are on every page in every illustration.

The second half of the book is devoted to a description of all of the major available orchid genera and is appended with information on rarer orchids. Growing tips and other advice in this section will help even those who are no longer novices. An updated list of sources for plants and supplies is very helpful.

I loved the first edition of this book and this version is certainly an improvement. If you are contemplating the purchase of your first orchid, buy this book first.
