Landscape architect Mario Nievera, a midwesterner, recalls the many gardens he worked on as designer and consultant since 1996. His forté in designing spaces into green outdoor rooms is highly marketable; he has worked on 400 gardens on both American coasts — both north and south of the border, as well as in China. He notes that "many of his clients request highly composed and manicured landscapes that have structure and formality." Individual gardens are meticulously groomed, mainly in a formal style. Hardscape is in sharp contrast to the cool green of various plantings. Where outdoor living is a key feature, Nievera emphasized the pools, fountains, and ocean views that caressed the structures. Even the pavement plays a prominent part in the design of a property. The author concludes his comments with a brief guide to his favorite plants for use in both the North and South.
