For more than 20 years, Robert Mallet has been in charge of the park Les Bois des Moutiers in Normandy, which was created by his grandfather. He draws on these multi-generational experiences to educate readers and gardeners not entirely acquainted with "belvederes, gazebos, and watchtowers." Illustrations throughout this work provide a sense of Mallet’s notions of color, spacing, lighting, and other elements. Yves Pinsot’s drawings add details about the placement of objects in a garden to achieve certain effects. Mallet invokes whimsy with "surprise effects, quirks, amazing or funny things." This book is enjoyable to read and a visual feast, with a number of ideas that could be adapted to more humble settings.
