Sir Terence Conran, a designer, restaurateur and lifelong passionate gardener, has written a very civilized, beautifully designed book. The reader will learn more about the author and the recipes of his associates than about new advances in horticulture in this personal book. Fanciers of heirloom vegetables, whose number increases daily, will, however, cheer Sir Conran's frequent recommendations of superior varieties. Emphasis is on growing in containers, small places and even rooftops, but in this regard Michael Guerra'sThe Edible Container Garden (New York: Simon & Schuster, 2000) is far superior.
